At the beginning of the event it didn't look promising for the Ferrari crew because the team had bad luck in qualifying. Jaime Melo had a puncher after just one flying lap due to unexplained reasons which meant there was no chance of a good position in qualifying. The successful trio had to start the race from P10 of the GT2 class but the hope for a lucky finish was still there and so all entered the race full of enthusiasm.
Pierre took over the car from Jaime who had taken the car up to fifth place. Kaffer did numerous very fast laps and offered a great battle with the two Corvettes and the two Porsches to the spectators before the sky turned black and an awful thunderstorm turned up. After Pierre's two stints it was Mika Salo's turn who only had the pleasure for seven laps in the F430, five of them behind the safety car. Due to a perfect pit stop strategy the #62 Ferrari was able to get up front in the GT2 class. The Risi crew called Salo two laps earlier to the pits than all the others to change to wet tyres. When Mika passed the pit lane exit a heavy shower poured down exactly at the right time because the F430 with the starting number 62 was the only car with wet tyres. Salo was able to pass everybody and took over the lead in the GT2 class.
The race track became unsafe due to the thunderstorm so that the red flag was shown and all cars had to be parked in the pit lane and were covered to wait for better weather. The rain god didn't show any consideration. This time Petit Le Mans was really petit - four hours and 49 minutes. The race wasn't restarted so that the standing at the time of the red flag was the result.
Pierre after the short but exciting race: "Just a dream! In 2009 we won all three important endurance races for Ferrari with the Risi Competizione Team. What else can I say than awesome, wow!
I have never experienced such weather conditions at a race track. I really enjoyed my stints and the battle with the Corvettes and Porsches were hard but fair. Our F430 was simply perfect thanks to a revised aerodynamic package plus the unbelievable great timing at the pit stops. We were brave with our decision to change to wet tyres early and we were rewarded richly. Just cool that we won all three super events in one year. We took the needed 30 points and now it will be even more interesting at the last race. We still have the chance to win the GT2 championship. So keep your fingers crossed for Laguna Seca!"
